APECS multidisciplinary polar talks II (14 Oct 2021, 15:00)
14 October 2021 @ 15:00–16:00
APECS Sweden is inviting to a Zoom-seminar with exciting talks on Thursday, October 14th, 15:00.
Boreal forests under pressure – climate, fire, human impacts in east Siberia
Stefan Kruse, Alfred Wegener Institute
Siberian boreal forests play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. However, underlain by permafrost soils, it is rather uncertain whether they could develop into a carbon source rather than continuing atmospheric carbon sequestration under global warming.
Consequently, investigation of responses and monitoring of soils, vegetation ground cover and tree stands is necessary. This and necessary upscaling to the vast areas of Siberian forests is the focus of the high-latitude land cover group, a focus-group of the Polar Terrestrial Environmental Systems research group at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute.
In my talk, I will focus on the most recent expedition in August this summer, visiting wildfire and land-use sites with our colleagues from the North Eastern Federal University Yakutsk.
Investigating polar marine ice margins and glacio-lacustrine environments using non-commerical autonomous surface vessels: from concept to application
